Born in 1964 in Galicia, Lugo, in the Northwest part of Spain, Antonio Murado often describes his process as an exchange with his canvases. Highly skilled, he handles paint and color with experienced dexterity, blending and layering shade and light. By reducing his works down to the essentials of paint, linen and stretcher bar, Murado "leaves room for the soul of the paintings, which brings it to life." In this new series of works, Ánimas ("spirit"), Murado finds inspiration in 17th century Baroque Spain and the Age of Exploration. Richly red paintings are reminiscent of ritual cloths and Medieval wall tapestries, while vast oceanscapes reference exploration, conquest and discovery. Even his choice of linen references this moment art historically, in which linen surpassed panel as the medium on which to paint. Murado intentionally creates visible seams, emphasizing its materiality, and works with the fiber's natural textures and imperfections. Opening February 21, Antonio Murado's Ánimas will be held in the Mana Café on the 5th floor at Mana Chicago.
