CAMPBELL COUNTY, Ky. (WKRC) - Campbell County Commissioners recently passed a resolution to that gives the county consent to run a needle exchange program. The resolution is good until December 31, 2018. In Kenton County a similar program has been given the OK, but not yet approved by a host city. For groups like NKY Hates Heroin this type of program is a life changing effort for those suffering from addiction. By getting dirty needles off the street those in support of the program are also energized to try and cut down the number Hepatitis C and AIDS cases. "If we can stop one incidence of aids it would pay for the whole program," said Eric Specht of NKY Hates Heroin. Specht directly knows what heroin is capable of, his son Nicholas died of an overdose two and a half years ago. Specht thinks if these types of exchange programs were available for his son, maybe he could have gotten help. "Our organization is very interested in helping people that find themselves in the same situation we found ourselves in as parents when we found out our son was using heroin," said Specht. In Campbell County the hope is to run the program out of the county health department in the administration building on Monmouth. For that to happen Newport must approve the program. A second location of St. Elizabeth Hospital may also be considered but would require Ft. Thomas to approve it.
