Join us as we show you how to be successful cloning your favorite plants. In this video, we will be cloning our in store coleus plant. Follow our step by step tutorial and see how easy it is. Cloning allows you to replicate your favorite plants and multiply your garden with a single plant, sometimes called a mother plant. There are many ways to clone a plant, but today, we are focusing on using rooting plugs (Root Riots), and rooting gel (Clonex) method. First step, always ensure the mother plant you are taking cuttings from is healthy and pest free. If either one of those is an issue, try fixing the problem before you create more. Sanitary cutting equipment is a must when taking cuttings off of a plant. Think of it like surgery, would you want a surgeon cutting into you with a dirty blade, not the ideal option and the same goes for plants. Cutting into the tissue of the plant causes stress on the plant and any additional bacteria could mean failure. It's best to use a clean razor blade, some people prefer scissors but in my opinion it damages the cell walls a lot more than a clean slice from a razor blade. No matter what option you choose, make sure to sterilize with alcohol prior to making any cuts. When cutting, make a 45 degree cut and immediately dip into your preferred rooting gel or compound and then place the cut into your root plug. I like to soak my plugs in a light nutrient solutuion of about 175-200 ppm, I do this to give the plants a jump start once they start popping roots. The ideal wettness of the plug should feel like a damp sponge, you should see some water present but not pouring out when squeezing lightly. After putting the clone in the plug, add it to your mini greenhouse kit ( 10x20 tray, tray/plug insert, 7.5" vented dome). Ideal conditions inside the greenhouse: 70-80 degrees and humidity 80-100%. Vents on dome should be fully closed for the first 5 to 7 days and no need to open the dome for 2-3 days, around day 4-6 start opening and closing the dome 2-3 times a day for air exchange followed by slowly opening the vents day by day to acclimate the plants to the outside air as they start to root. If the plants droop, close the vents to build up the moisture and continue the process until they are ready to transplant. The next step is crucial to the success of your transplant, make sure the media being transplanted into is nice and moist, if it's too dry the plant will suffer and possibly die from lack of moisture. After transplanting you should not have to water for another 3-4 days while the plant spreads roots into its new home. Keep in mind that we are in Arizona so it's usually hotter a lot dryer here compared to other parts of the country, so you might have to adjust some of the steps to dial it in. I.E. if you live in an area with high humidity you might not have to close the vents on the dome or use a dome at all. People always wonder why someone they watch on youtube can be so successful where as they fail attempting the same thing. It has a lot to do with where you live and only using videos like this as a guideline to tweek in ways that work for you.
