In Chinese culture, the dragon is revered as a divine mythical creature, a symbol of power, strength, wealth, and good fortune, and it is often portrayed alongside a luminous or flaming pearl. Dragons are also believed to be the rulers of water and weather. Each coin is struck by The Perth Mint from 1oz of 99.99% pure silver and issued as legal tender under the Australian Currency Act 1965. The Perth Mint will release no more than 500,000 of the Dragon 2018 1oz Silver Bullion Rectangular Coin. The coin’s reverse depicts a stylised Chinese dragon chasing a flaming pearl, with wind, clouds and water in the background. The design also includes The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark. Designed by Ing Ing Jong. The Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, 2018 year-date and the weight and fineness are depicted on the coin’s obverse. Is this a coin or a bar? By all definition, this Dragon is a coin - it has a face value of $1 (AUD) backed by the Australian government; all are identical - they do not have individual serial numbers and it features Sir Ian Rank-Broadleys' portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse. It is a coin, but you would be forgiven for calling it a bar, due to its unusual shape for a coin. The denomination, or face value, is one dollar. Coin design © The Perth Mint
