Thoughts on finity abound in the texts of Bach’s cantatas. Ich hatte viel Bekümmernis (BWV 21) too refers to the struggle with a life that is fleeting. What this instrumental sinfonia at the start of the cantata would express beyond a musical emotion that cannot be captured in philosophical terms is uncertain — and was probably so to Bach himself. What remains true, however, is that the music breathes a spirituality that is resolute in its pursuit of the sublime. Amsterdam Sinfonietta and violinists Candida Thompson and Simone Lamsma will release a new album called Pärt über Bach on April 26, 2024. Sinfonia from Bach is the first single of this album and is available on all streaming platforms.
