In this episode we will be talking about Post Consumer Recycled Content (PCR.) So what exactly is Post Consumer Recycled Content? This is material that is diverted from the landfill by a consumer’s recycling efforts and is then utilized in the production of other products. A good example of this is aluminum cans. After the can has been used and put into the recycling bin it will be sent to a manufacturer and melted down for use in creating other aluminum products. We want to understand the entire scope of recycling and sustainable packaging to find ways to improve our footprint. In pursuit of this goal, earlier this month we visited a recycling facility and took a tour. We learned a lot of interesting information that we will share over the course of this series. One question we asked in particular from last episode was “Is the rainbow tin recyclable?” The answer is YES IT IS RECYCLABLE. But the steel tin must be separated from the non-recyclable plastic cover or else the facility may not accept it. We need to be doing our part as consumers in our daily lives to make sure we are separating mixed materials and discarding non-recyclable plastics. As we’ve mentioned before these materials are sorted by real people. Let’s make it as easy as possible for the recycling process to succeed. When we recycle materials they are re-used in other products. Typically we are not dealing with 100% post consumer recycled material. This comes down to performance. Products with recycled materials are typically less durable than new material and would be a bad choice for products like car fenders. However, when it comes to something like a shampoo bottle there is the potential to use more recycled material. Head and Shoulders is currently producing shampoo bottles with high percentages of recycled ocean plastics choosing to embrace the impurities that are associated with using this material. We think that is a brilliant marketing tactic in a market exhibiting an increasing eco-consciousness and commend their efforts. Coca Cola is another company that has shown exemplary efforts in embracing sustainability efforts in their manufacturing under the supervision of the FDA. The amount of post consumer recycled content PET re-purposed by Coca Cola steadily grows each year! Windex is another company that has introduced recycled PET and PP into their spray bottles. We should be cheering these companies on! Without manufacturers repurposing recycled materials, there would be no point in trying to recycle in the first place. The next time you notice a product with sustainable packaging we encourage you to choose it over one that is not whenever possible. The sooner we can transition to a market where all packaging is sustainable the closer we can get to cleaning up our planet. Item Of The Week is our CR Squeeze Tubes!
