From Contemporary Sounds 2026 Recorded live in performance at Denison University on February 4, 2026 Timothy Hagen, flute Chris Faur, visuals Program note from the composer During pandemic I was attracted a lot to the idea of Penelope in Homer’s the Odyssey; not as an object of desire, but rather as an example unto herself. In Homer’s Epic Poem, Penelope deceives her suitors by telling them she will pick a new husband when she has finished a burial cloth for Odysseus’ father. Each night in secret she undoes the work as a way of delaying her suitors. Trying to compose consistently during the pandemic oftentimes felt like working and then immediately undoing that work. Was it good enough? When would I be finished without the looming prospect of hard deadlines? The result in many cases was a lot of revising, second guessing and experimentation. I think I actually ended up learning quite a lot in the process, but more often than not it felt like Penelope and her funeral cloth, waiting to be saved. In the end, I choose to be grateful for that time to explore, despite my self-amending. Penelope is the welcome fruit of that labor.
