I studied with Bernard Garfield during the four years of my undergraduate degree at Temple University. If anyone could be called my bassoon “hero”, he is that person. In high school I used to listen to his recordings and radio broadcasts with the Philadelphia Orchestra, where he served as principal bassoon from 1957–2000. I always wondered how he came up with his expressive ideas and how he achieved his characteristically dark tone quality. To this day I quote his guidance in almost every lesson I teach. I chose Etude #16, Andante molto dolce, for this in-studio performance because it’s based on the famous opening bassoon solo from Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. As high as that solo already is, Garfield works the bassoonist through higher and higher versions of the solo, first in C major, then D, E and finally F major to exercise the high register. His dual role as performer and teacher is beautifully demonstrated in this study. —Jeffrey Lyman, November 7, 2019
