Ned sits in the winterfell library. He’s been dreaming of this day, the day when he would be sent north to the Eyrie for many years now. Everything he’d ever seen had played out exactly as he’d foreseen it, and now he had no choice, he had to tell his father. He had to try to save Brandon and Rickard. When Ned enters his solar unprompted, Rickard looks up from the letter he’d been writing. Rickard Stark: Ned, I was about to ask you to come here, excellent. Ned: Father, I know why you wanted me to come up here, I know I’m getting sent to the Eyrie because you want to foster alliances with the south. Rickard: Wait. Ned, how did you find that out? Ned: I also know that you want to betrothe Brandon to Catelyn Tully, and that you have plans for marrying Lyanna to Robert. I’ve seen these things in my dreams for years now. And if they continue to come true, bad things will happen. Rickard considers his middle son, then sends for Brandon. When Brandon arrives, Rickard demands a full explanation. Both of the older stark men listen carefully as Ned lays out many of the important bits from the engagement to Catelyn Tully to Lyanna running off with Rhaegar Targaryen. He even details such as the circumstances of their deaths. When Brandon hears the story, he exchanges considering looks with their father. Rickard: This is an interesting invention, Ned. I don't suppose you'll tell me where you found out about you going down to the Eyrie. Ned: But, Father! Please! You have to believe me. Brandon: Ned, what you said was a good story, but let's try not to talk about that. If it continues as you predicted, we'll think about what you've told us. Ned glances between Brandon and his father, desperate to have them believe him. Ned: It's true, father. I don't want you to die. Rickard: Ned, I'm not going to die, don't worry. Now go get ready and say goodbye to your little brother and sister. Eyes filled with tears, Ned runs out of the office. However, Brandon stays in the office. Brandon Stark: So, you're going to marry me off to Catelyn Tully. Rickard: Yes, that was- Brandon Stark: Is that the letter you're going to send to Lord Hoster? Rickard sighs and holds up the letter for his son to examine. Before Rickard can do anything, Brandon grabs the letter and casually rips it up before tossing the remnants in the brazier. Brandon: Sorry, father, but we're not doing it your way. Rickard: Brandon, please. Brandon: No, I'm going to marry Barbary Ryswell. Not Catelyn Tully. Rickard: She's the daughter of one of our own bannerman. Brandon: Yes, and? Rickard buries his face in his hands and ponders the repercussions of disinheriting both his sons. Finally, he controls his irritation and interlaces his fingers. Rickard: I am done with the north being a backwater. I want to involve House Stark in the affairs of the seven kingdoms. If we don't pull ourselves into the modern era, we'll be left behind. Brandon: Then have Ned or Benjen fulfill your southern ambitions. I'm not interested. Rickard sighing: Why do the gods torment me with insubordinate, reckless, mad sons? Brandon: Cheer up, father. You never sent the letter so ned can be engaged to Catelyn Tully. Rickard: Hoster won't engage his daughter to anyone but the heir of a great house. Brandon: Well then, Ned can go off and tell his crazy stories elsewhere. Also, if several of the things Ned predicted don't happen, he'll abandon any notions of being a prophet. Rickard: Fair point, so you're determined to circumvent my wishes? Brandon nods and Rickard pulls out another piece of parchment so he can write a letter to Lord Ryswill. Not wanting to have his little brother leave on bad terms, Brandon looks for Ned and finds him hiding in the godswood. Brandon: You always pick the same hiding spot, little brother. Ned: Go away. You don't believe me so leave me alone. Brandon takes a seat next to his younger brother and places a hand on his shoulder. Ned tries to pull away, but Brandon just pulls Ned into a hug. Brandon: I just wanted to thank you, Ned. I don't know how you found out about it, but you were right about the Tully marriage. But now that you've told me, I'm free to marry the girl I actually want. I think you've been touched by the old gods, likely to keep our family safe. #gameofthrones #gameofthroneswhatif #whatif
