Druskininkai, a charming spa town situated along the Nemunas River in southern Lithuania, near the Belarus and Poland borders, first appeared in historical records in 1636. Its name, hinting at the local practice of harvesting valuable minerals, underscores its rich, health-focused heritage. By the late 18th century, the mineral-rich waters of Druskininkai were recognized for their healing properties, particularly beneficial in treating asthma and other health issues. In the early 19th century, a professor from the University of Vilnius conducted an analysis revealing that the waters were rich in essential minerals like Calcium, Sodium, Potassium, Iodine, Iron, and Magnesium. The town's significant development as a health resort began in 1837 when Czar Nicholas I of Russia, also ruling over Poland and Finland at the time, officially designated it as a spa town. This led to the construction of numerous pensions and hostels to accommodate visitors. Today, Druskininkai is renowned as Lithuania's most forested spa destination. The local government actively maintains its lush landscape by planting hundreds of new trees annually. The town is enveloped by pine forests, enhancing the already clean and highly ionized air. For those who enjoy the outdoors, the area offers numerous walking and cycling paths, perfect for leisurely strolls or Nordic walking. A standout attraction is the Snow Arena, one of the largest indoor skiing facilities in Europe. It boasts an indoor slope of 460 meters in length, with widths reaching up to 63 meters, and a vertical drop of 65.65 meters.
