(31 Oct 1994) STORY: COUNT LOCATION: MOZAMBIQUE DATE: 29-30 OCTOBER 1994 DURATION: 1.23 Chissano ahead on early results President Joaquim Chissano and his ruling Mozambique Liberation Front on Sunday (30/10) took an early lead in the first unofficial returns from the African nation's first multi-party election. The AIM national news agency reported that returns from 39 polling stations in Maputo, outlying areas and northern Nampula Province - all strongholds of Chissano's ruling FRELIMO party - gave him a lead of 25,720 to 3,934 over his chief rival for president, former rebel leader Afonso Dhlakama. Chissano's FRELIMO party also held a substantial lead over Dhlakama's Mozambique National Resistance (RENAMO), 19,567 to 3,816. No returns have been reported yet from RENAMO strongholds in central provinces. As expected, the other 12 parties and 10 presidential candidates received few votes. Officials have said they expect the counting of votes from 7,446 polling stations to take almost all of the two weeks permitted under election laws. The returns reported by AIM came from tallies posted at polling stations after an initial count that must be checked in a second count by the National Election Commission. The election held over three days culminated a peace process that began two years ago with a truce that ended 15 years of civil war between the FRELIMO government and RENAMO. Fighting, famine and disease killed 600,000 people and sent another 1 million fleeing as refugees, leaving the economy in ruins. RENAMO boycotted the start of voting on Thursday, alleging irregularities it said would allow widespread fraud, but was persuaded by U.N. officials and African leaders like Robert Mugabe to re-enter the process.
