Taken from the front of a summer special R32 on the A as it runs from from Rockaway Boulevard to Beach 67th St across Jamaica Bay. It's rather pathetic that the best speed these or any NYC subway trainsets can reach is around 35-40mph even on a several mile long straightaway. The Rockaway Branches were once part of the Long Island Railroad and was turned over to the NYCTA in the 1950's. The train heads down the ramp from the Lefferts El to the LIRR right of way in the first minute of the video. While doing this is passes Rockaway Blvd tower which controls that junction and others between there and Howard Beach. In this video you can also see the NYC Subway test track adjacent to the eastbound track just prior to the Broad Channel station. Lost fast as in the first second the switch throws from the Lefferts El to the Rockaway Branch. For those of you who don't know for the last several years the NYCTA has been rotating its fleet of 200 or so remaining 1964 vintage Budd R32's out onto the A during the summer months from their more usual C routing because they have better air conditioning more suited to the outside running encountered on the Far Rock branch.
