We fixed it, but then it filled with water again. Look at the mattresses and the blankets, they’re all soaked with water. We brought new mattresses again, but it got filled with water once more. I tried to fix the tent; I managed to repair it, but with the wind it keeps coming loose and flying, and there is still water inside. We don’t know where this will end.” 4. Tent flies away due to strong winds STORYLINE: Heavy rain and strong winds battered tents sheltering displaced people along Beirut’s waterfront, ripping canvas loose and soaking mattresses and personal belongings, as families struggled to keep what little they had dry. At Lebanon's capital waterfront area, makeshift tents shook violently as rain poured down, forcing displaced families to scramble to secure plastic sheets and wooden support, while water pooled inside their shelters. Fadi Younes, displaced from Beirut’s southern suburbs, said repeated attempts to repair his tent had failed. “Look at the mattresses and the blankets, they’re all soaked with water. We brought new mattresses again, but it got filled with water once more," he said. In just 10 days, more than 800,000 people in Lebanon have been displaced by war, just over a year since the last conflict uprooted over a million from their homes. That’s one in every seven people in the tiny country, according to Norwegian Refugee Council, a humanitarian organization. Many don’t have a place to stay, and the cash-strapped government has only been able to accommodate roughly 120,000 people as it scrambles to open shelters and bring in more supplies. More than a million people were displaced in the last war, but that was toward the end of it after a year of limited fighting that gradually escalated. This time, what took months, happened in days.
