We’re Turning This Land Into Our Food Source | 2026 Begins #87

In this episode, we spend several days working outside, laying the foundations for a more productive garden that will (hopefully!) feed us for years to come. To protect everything we’re growing, we start by installing a boundary fence to keep wild boar out — a very real challenge when growing food here. From there, it’s all about planting for the future. We add new fruit trees to the land, including yellow plum, Granny Smith apple, Fuji apple, almond, and clementine, and plant grape vines with the dream of one day making our own wine. We also prepare new growing areas on our sloped ¼-acre garden, planting seedlings directly into the ground as we move away from container growing and try to increase how much food we can produce ourselves. Compost is another major goal for this year, so we get three new compost piles started, using what we have to begin closing the loop and improving the soil naturally. It’s a busy, muddy, and very satisfying start to the year — full of hard work, big plans, and long-term thinking.
