Since reading his work, “The Land of Look Behind”, I had wanted to set his work as much of it can speak to us in a modern context. (notes by Daniel Fawcett) “Voyage” The mystique of the sea, where waves act as snares, hang boughs over wet blackness wherever winds die driven ashore. Melancholy vastness-its pleasure the dim lights swallowed in glutton happiness the further I search the sea. “Between Two Stones” They poured hot water into people's cups in which green tea leaves were floating like algae, or into red-painted spittoons placed on the floor which the travellers made frequent use of... It was strangely quiet. “Leaf Doctor” You said happiness was a bird - a hand extended could bend its perch. span the perfect wings. I spoke of swallows. lived off flies ebbed when flying. seldom came to rest. “Passing” I should be busy with words but light distracts me makes for me, in the sowing of its waves, neutral observances, a chilled awareness that the sublime is contained herein the wonders of the commonplace.
