The OHIO Nobody Talks About Anymore - Discover the forgotten Ohio when Youngstown steel mills glowed orange at night, Akron was the rubber capital of the world, and a high school graduate could buy a house within five years on a factory wage. Before the Rust Belt collapse, Ohio was America's industrial heartland. Youngstown steel mills employing tens of thousands with steelworkers earning $10K-15K annually, Akron's four major tire companies (Goodyear, Firestone, Goodrich, General Tire) employing over 60,000 workers at peak, GM Lordstown plant with 11,000+ workers building Chevrolet Vegas earning $15K-20K per year, Toledo building Jeeps at Willys-Overland, houses costing $15K-25K that factory workers could afford on single incomes, strong union contracts with United Steelworkers and UAW protecting workers, ethnic neighborhoods of Italians, Poles, Hungarians maintaining traditions around the mills, and Black Monday September 1977 when Youngstown Steel shut down eliminating 5,000 jobs overnight starting the collapse. This was working-class prosperity before foreign competition and automation destroyed it all. #Ohio #RustBelt #Youngstown
