Game animation has come into its own in recent years, forcing animators to wield a unique blend of art, design and technical prowess. From GDC 2016's Animation Bootcamp. Ubisoft is always looking to innovate especially in the field of animation, with time consuming data creation, lengthy implementation and the rising costs of high quality character animation it became necessary to find a smarter solution to creating animation for our games. Our mandate was to improve on all these areas whilst maintaining high quality animation without having to compromise on player control, look and feel. I will highlight the animation challenges of working with this new approach and the advantages… as well as disadvantages it can bring. Ubisoft Toronto has been at the forefront of this Animation Technology and this presentation will talk about the animator’s role in the creative side as well as the practical side of Motion Matching, how implementation has been accelerated, what it can do and how it frees up the animator to focus on quality and variety of animation styles without the significant burden of implementation. The takeaway from this presentation is to show how Ubisoft Toronto is attempting to find innovative and more efficient ways of pushing realism within games animation, to allow for faster prototyping and providing us with the ability to add large volumes of animation data.
