Woman being carried by female security forces STORYLINE Thousands of Israeli troops dragged sobbing Jewish settlers out of homes on Wednesday and hauled them onto buses in a massive eviction operation, carrying out Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's policy to end Israel's 38-year occupation of the Gaza Strip. Troops scuffled with protesters in the isolated southern Gaza settlement of Morag, but there were no signs of serious violence and it appeared many residents were coming to terms with the withdrawal. A settler woman being forcibly moved from Morag lightly wounded a soldier by sticking her with a medical needle, the army said. It was first report of a soldier being wounded during Day One of Israel's eviction of settlers from the Gaza Strip. The attacker was arrested, the army said. Morag was one of several settlements being emptied out by Israeli troops on Wednesday as part of Sharon's plan to dismantle all of Gaza's 21 Jewish settlements and four small settlements in the northern West Bank. Some 14,000 troops had entered five Jewish settlements - Morag, Neve Dekalim, Bedolah, Ganei Tal and Tel Katifa. Security officials said the goal was to clear out the 21 Gaza settlements in just a few days, far more quickly than originally planned. An army colonel said troops were determined to clear Morag by Wednesday evening, fearing possible mortar fire from nearby Palestinian towns. Under Israel's plan to leave Gaza and the four West Bank settlements, residents were given until midnight local (2100gmt) Tuesday to leave their homes or face forcible removal and the loss of up to one-third of government compensation. Officials said about half of Gaza's 8,500 settlers left before the deadline.
