For over 300 years, from approximately 85 CE to 370 CE, the Roman army continually occupied this strategic site, with only brief periods of abandonment. This extended occupation led to the construction and rebuilding of at least nine forts and their adjacent settlements, creating an incredibly rich stratigraphic record of Roman life. What makes Vindolanda truly exceptional are the unique oxygen-reduced soil conditions, particularly in its earlier timber phases (ca. 85-130 CE). These conditions have preserved organic materials that rarely survive elsewhere, including thousands of leather shoes and the famous Vindolanda writing tablets – thin, wooden postcards bearing handwritten letters and official documents, offering an unparalleled glimpse into the daily lives of Roman soldiers and civilians. Even after the Roman army's departure in the early 5th century CE, occupation continued, showing a reorganization of the site into the 5th and 6th centuries. Today, Vindolanda is operated by the Vindolanda Trust, a charitable organization dedicated to ongoing excavations, artifact conservation, education, and public engagement, allowing us to connect deeply with its rich and complex past.
