Mid of Marc Josemans locking up his coffee shop and walking away STORYLINE The owners of three cannabis-selling cafes are going on trial in the southern Netherlands charged with selling cannabis to foreigners. The controversial case has turned into a heated drugs debate that both sides hope will clarify the legality of a clampdown on so-called coffee shops. Marc Josemans, owner of the "Easy Going" coffee shop, was arrested on 5 May because he flouted a Maastricht city ban on selling marijuana to non-Dutch residents. "Right now only six coffee shops in Maastricht are open, but only to Dutch residents. So, people who live in Holland, no matter what your nationality is," says Josemans. "All the other coffee shops refuse to open and they are staying closed because otherwise we have to discriminate and we just simply cannot live with that," he added. Maastricht is using the new legislation as a way of clamping down on what the local Mayor says was a nuisance caused by hundreds of thousands of tourists driving into the picturesque heart of the city to buy cannabis.
