WATCH LIVE: Another Zimbabwe Army General Dies ( Samuel Mpabanga) WATCH LIVE as Gambakwe looks at the death of another Zimbabwe army Generel in the middle of one of the busiest weeks. Brigadier General (Retired) Samuel Mpabanga, a liberation war veteran whose Chimurenga name was Moffat Nkomo, died on 9 February 2026 at Gwanda General Hospital at age 69 following a long illness, with mourners gathered at his Bulawayo residence. He was promoted from Colonel to Brigadier-General in July 2022, but by the time of his death he was referred to as "retired" — despite not having reached the mandatory retirement age for commissioned officers. Under new regulations effective January 2025, the retirement age for commissioned officers is 65, with extensions for liberation war veterans permitted up to 70 years. His retirement status is therefore not explained by age, but almost certainly by a medical discharge due to the prolonged illness that led to his death, as military practice allows for the retirement of officers rendered unfit for duty. Voluntary early retirement is also a possibility, but either explanation confirms he was legally eligible to serve longer and left active duty due to health or personal circumstances, not statutory age limits.
