Ionizing radiation is a known carcinogen. But it is also naturally occurring. It deposits a lot of energy when it interacts with material, which can be used for both the benefit and to the detriment of society and the environment. Conversations about radiation can be difficult due to different understandings of concepts related to it. In this webinar, our guest Dr. R. Neil Alexander PhD, examines the concepts of hazard, danger, risk, and fear: how they are conflated and why it's important for radiation protection communication to teach the difference between them. Neil is the Chief Cheese at his company Bucephalus Consulting and is contracted one day a week to the CNS to be its Head of Communications. He has worked with radioactive materials throughout his 40-year plus career, where as a jack of all trades and master of none he has gained experience of supporting plant maintenance and operations, decommissioning and waste management, transport, radioisotope production, Small Modular Reactors, and fusion. He has held senior positions in industry, not for profits, and academia including AECL, The University of Saskatchewan, The Organization of Canadian Nuclear Industries, and the United Kingdom Atomic Energy Authority. As this webinar is part of our ongoing Radiation Safety and Wellness Webinar Series, the final 20 minutes is a wellness break of beginner Tai Chi with Charlmane Wong of Ji Hong Tai Chi and Qi Gong Richmond Hill.
