Fig trees give an ABUNDANT harvest and are so worth cultivating! If you have the space for a fig tree, we highly recommend having one. In this video we logged the growing season. We hold to the practice of cutting our fig down every winter - down to about 18 inches and cover it with straw - in order for it to regrow and be more fruitful the next year. It sits dormant for many months. But then abundant growth of the plant really kicks up in June. You’ll see in this video how it changes from June through September. You’ll learn what the growing habits are of the tree and why it’s so important to give it a lot of water. Five gallons of water per week, per root, is crucial for plump and ripe figs. When early fall comes, figs start to ripen slowly, here and there, so you’ll want to start checking your tree daily. Within a month’s time, the fruit starts to ripen in great quantities daily. We’ll show you here what the figs look like when they should be picked, as well as what they look like when they’ve been on the tree too long. Our tree yields about 300 figs each fall. Figs are wonderful fresh, but we also water bath can them for use in recipes throughout the year. Welcome to Joyful Homestead!
