LGBTQ Stoner Comedy PRETENDERS will celebrate it virtual World Premiere At Cinequest Film Festival 20th - 30th March 2021. PRETENDERS is a coming-of-age stoner comedy rebelling against common film portrayals of LGBTQ characters. Tristen Stafford's comedy featue will Premiere this weekend as an official selection of the 2021 Cinequest Film Festival headquarters in San Jose, Calif. “Queer struggle and trauma is often fetishized in movies,” says writer, director and editor Tristen Stafford, who is queer. “I wanted to write a movie that rebelled against that, with goofy stoner characters who aren’t necessarily struggling with that aspect of themselves.” https://www.pretendersthemovie.com/ https://www.creatics.org/cinejoy/movi... The story begins with Jasper (Libby Larkin) and Hannah (Emma Grace Myers), two “hometown heroes'' who never fully grew up. They reunite with Nick (Diata Coleman), their childhood best friend and recent college graduate, and the trio takes a road trip to Hannah’s family beach house in Maine where Hannah and Jasper come out to Nick as a couple. Meanwhile, getting black-out drunk on a dirty beach just doesn’t hit the same anymore and the trio struggles to slip back into their old debauchery while Hannah questions the seriousness of her relationship with Jasper. They liven up their vacation by pretending to be other people. Stafford, who is based in Astoria, Queens, says he is heavily influenced by mumblecore films, which feature naturalistic and sometimes improvised dialogue. He describes “Pretenders” as a warm, nostalgic stoner comedy -- or perhaps the world’s first “resin comedy,” as the movie’s characters often have to resort to smoking resin, the sticky residue left after smoking marijuana in a pipe. “Pretenders,” which largely takes part at a vibrant summer carnival, was filmed in Old Orchard Beach, Maine, Long Island, Coney Island and Flushing, Queens. Larkin is an actor and musician from Sayville, Long Island and based in New York City. She has appeared on ABC’s “What Would You Do” and Madonna’s “Her Story,” among others. Myers is a New York City-based actor and writer from Rensselaer, New York. She currently works in animation casting at Nickelodeon and in casting and creative for Journey Home Pictures. Coleman is an actor from Chicago, Illinois with a BFA in acting. He was in the 2020 film “The King of Staten Island.” The movie also features actor Troy Hall as the antagonist Charlie, a manchild who serves as a sort of ghost of Jasper’s future yet to come. Troy co-wrote and acted in “Peel, “starring Emile Hirsch and Amy Benneman. It was released by Sony in 2019. “Pretenders” was produced by Journey Home production company, Executive Producers Sikander Sidhu and Matt Walton, and Producers Adam Gale, James Canellos and Stafford. Pretenders was written by Stafford, and Myers, with cinematography by Christian Schlicht. Stafford, Larkin, Myers, Coleman, and Gale are all graduates of SUNY Purchase. The film was scored by Massachusetts-based composer Benjamin Gauthier. “Pretenders” will debut March 20 in the CINEJOY Virtual Film Festival, which features the films of the Cinequest Film Festival, and will be available for streaming between March 20 and March 30. Tickets to stream “Pretenders” are available at https://creatics.org/cinejoy and cost $3.99. Once streaming begins, the film must be viewed within five hours. #PretendersTrailer #LGBTQFilm #StonerComedy
