(7 Oct 2019) German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Monday held talks with his Georgian counterpart, Salome Zurabishvili, in Tbilisi. At a joint news conference, Steinmeier discussed the Ukraine-Russia peace process, and said he had been surprised by this weekend's protest in Kyiv. Thousands rallied in the Ukraine capital against President Volodymyr Zelenskiy's plan to hold a local election in the country's rebel-held east, a move seen by some as a major concession to Russia. Among those taking part in the protest was Zelenskiy's predecessor, Petro Poroshenko, who signed the 2015 peace agreement with Moscow. In turn, the Georgian leader used the news conference to call upon the international community to pay closer attention to simmering tension in her country, warning "the situation in our occupied territories... can any minute turn into a more serious situation". The president was referring to South Ossetia and Abkhazia, provinces it lost control of after an August 2008 war with Russia. Moscow recognised the regions as independent states and has a military presence in both.
