Stem rot of mustard caused by the fungus, Sclerotinia sclerotiorum, is a serious disease of brassica crops. The fungus appears on the stem about 10 cm above ground level and the infected 10-15 cm stem portion turn whitish. The tissues underneath the infected area also get rotten. Such symptoms appear at pod formation stage of the crop. As a result the nutrients flow is obstructed and the plants dry up pre-maturely producing poorly developed seeds. The affected plants, which are brown in colour and stand erect in the field, can be easily identified from a far distance.The fungus survives in soil mainly in the form of the fungal structures called sclerotia produced in side the infected stem pith or outside on the stem.There is no control of this disease once the symptoms appear on the stem. However, prophylactic two foliar sprays with carbendazim 0.1% provide satisfactory control of this disease.
