Mountbatten first met Nehru and his wife in 1946 and their friendship was formed when he came to India as Viceroy. However, things with Jinnah never went smoothly. The biggest reason was that Mountbatten wanted to avoid partition, just like Nehru, while Jinnah saw partition and Pakistan as his main goal. Till April 1947, Mountbatten argued with Jinnah to try and convince him to accept Cabinet Mission Plan that would have averted partition. But in vain. So, in May he hatched his own partition plan and sent it to Whitehall for approval. When it came back, Nehru was shown the approved version, not Jinnah. Nehru rejected it as it meant balkanization of India. So, Menon's Plan was accepted that allowed only Pakistan and India to be created. No province could declare independence. Jinnah-Mountbatten distrust had severe consequences for Jinnah chose to be Governor-General instead of Mountbatten and Mountbatten chose to be more partial than impartial especially on the vital issues of Boundary Commission and Kashmir.
