THE BOLD CABALLERO is classic Zorro filled with action, comedy…and COLOR. The action is coordinated by the Father of Stunts, the great Yakima Canutt. The comedy is supplied by Bob Livingston as Don Diego Vega, aka Zorro. Heather Angel stars as one of filmdom’s earliest feminist leading ladies. And even though this film was made in 1936, Zorro is in “Thrilling Natural Color!” If you like Zorro like I do, and I like them all, you’re going to really enjoy this special treat! Just to name a few terrific screen Zorro’s, there was Doug Fairbanks (1920), Tyrone Power (1940), John Carroll (1937), Reed Hadley (1939), Clayton Moore (1949), Alain Delon (1975), Frank Langella (1974), Antonio Bandaras (1998) and especially TV’s Guy Williams (1957). Also, Duncan Regehr (1990). 1936 was a very big year for Bob Livingston. Just prior to filming THE BOLD CABALLERO, Livingston had starred as another masked avenger in the Republic serial, THE VIGILANTES ARE COMING. Also in 1936, Bob made the first of many appearances as the lead in the popular series of B westerns, THE THREE MESQUITEERS. Bob Livingston received a Golden Boot Award in 1987, just months before his death. We had his old friend from Republic, Gene Autry, make the Golden Boot presentation to Bob. It was a wonderful night. His son, Addison Randall, told me that his Dad stayed alive long enough to accept his award. Addison’s Mother, Bob’s wife, was the daughter of filmmaker Hal Roach. The locations were shot at Republic Studios in Studio City and all over Corriganville. If you’re one of our regular viewers, you're bound to recognize some of the locations. And anytime that you see Yakima Canutt playing a small part, you know the film will be loaded with action. Of course, well-executed action scenes were one of Republic’s specialties. Sig Ruman is the evil Commandant. Ian Wolfe portrays a less comical priest than most versions. Other recognizable faces include Charlie Stevens, Walter Long, and Chris Pin Martin. Bob Livingston was writer, producer Sam Sherman’s favorite actor. Bob’s last film role was in the Sherman/Al Adamson opus, BLAZING STEWARDESSES, in 1975. But, in this film, you’re going to see Bob at his best. Thanks for joining us for this Word’s Wayback treat.
