(6 Dec 2019) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus127721 A maintenance worker has used a hammer and a flexible wall scrapper to remove the name of the billionaire family that owns OxyContin maker Purdue Pharma from a Tufts University building. Tufts University Medical School students cheered as the name of Arthur Sackler was stripped from their building amid concerns over the family's role in the opioid crisis. The move came after the school said it will strip the Sackler name from its campus and accept no further donations from the family. The decision ends a relationship that has spanned nearly four decades and brought $15 million to the school's science and medical programs. Tufts leaders said they considered the issue for more than a year before concluding it is inconsistent with the school's values to display the family's name. Officials said the Sackler name will now be dropped from all campus facilities and programs, including the biomedical sciences school, the medical school building, a laboratory and two research funds. Within hours of the announcement, however, the family vowed to fight back. An attorney for members of the Sackler family said that Tufts University's decision is based on "unproven allegations about the Sackler family and Purdue."
