Organized on November 17, 1774, as the Light Horse of the City of Philadelphia, the First Troop of Philadelphia City Cavalry is the oldest mounted unit in the United States Army and one of the oldest units in the Army National Guard. On June 19, 1775, the Continental Congress commissioned George Washington as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. The troop then embarked on the first of many calls to active service on June 20, 1775, when it escorted Gen. George Washington to New York City. In the history annals of the First Troop Philadelphia City Cavalry (the “Troop”), it is recorded that in June 1775, the Troop escorted General Washington to New York (wherein a unit from Massachusetts met General Washington and escorted him the rest of the way) on his journey to Cambridge, MA some 301 miles away. Legacy Marker Program host Eugene Hough talks about the ride and the Troop's desire over the years to both recreate and remember it.
