Dell Precision R5500 - In our video, we will provide a general review / overview of the Dell Precision R5500 rack server. We will especially focus on memory & CPUs, and we will discuss the different sizes, speeds and types of RAM supported. We will also let you know how to get to the max configuration possible for the Dell R5500. We will physically install and configure / upgrade the DIMMs and show some tips and tricks along the way. We will show how to open and access the various components inside. Sit back, relax and enjoy! Let's get started! The memory for the Dell Precision R5500 is pretty simple as a whole. It accepts DDR3 server modules. The R5500 has 12 DIMM slots. There are 2 types of memory supported: ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMM) and ECC Registered (RDIMM). We recommend RDIMMs. Why you ask? Well, ECC Registered is less expensive on a price per GB and offers much higher scalability. There are several speeds supported: 1066MT/s, 1333MT/s or 1600MT/s. Do note that 1600 will clock down to 1333. 1600 will work. Just not at full speed. Sizes supported include 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB. Do 32GB DIMMs work with the Dell R5500? No. Unfortunately 32GB modules are not compatible. 16GB is the highest and only for ECC Registered. Meaning the max configuration is 192GB via 12 x 16GB 1333MT/s ECC Registered Server Memory. For ECC unbuffered the max config is 6 x 8GB 1333MT/s. This is a dual CPU socket server running on Intel Xeon 5500 or 5600 series CPUs. We recommend some inexpensive hex cores such as X5650 X5660 X5670 or E5645. This is an LGA1366 processor socket. There are 6 DIMMs per processor. There are 3 memory channels per processor.
