Orta San Giulio , Isola San Giulio ,Italia 4k The center of Orta, completely pedestrianized, is characterized by narrow lanes: the main one runs parallel to the lakeshore and intersects with some steep streets that move away from the lake leading towards the Sacred Mount (UNESCO) In the center of the village is Piazza Motta, a real living room overlooking the lake, from which boats to theIsland of San Giulio depart. The square is surrounded on three sides by buildings well proportioned to the space, mostly arcaded. On the north side is the broletto or Community Palace of the Riviera di San Giulio,dating back to 1582,consisting of a porch on the ground floor, used for the market, and a meeting room on the first floor; here legislative as well as executive power was exercised through the General Council (composed of the deputies of the episcopal fiefdom) and is considered the symbol of the long period of self-government of the region. The building is a combination of classic and rustic elements, such as the frescoes on the façade and the irregular external staircase, the small columns of the porch and the beole roof. The building culminates with a small bell tower. The current town hall of Orta is Villa Bossi, with a beautiful garden overlooking the lake. In front of the broletto begins a wide uphill road called "Motta" (via Caire Albertoletti), entirely paved in stones, at the top of which is the parish church of Santa Maria Assunta,built in 1485 and rebuilt in the second half of the 18th century. The climb is lined with ancient typical houses and some historic palaces including Palazzo Gemelli, dating back to the 16th century characterized by three different buildings, the rounded frame and some paintings on the façade and, on the opposite side, the neoclassical Palazzo De Fortis Penotti. . . . .
