The Raid: Redemption is Gareth Evans' second feature film and Gareth was at the 2nd Kapow! Comic Convention in London for a Q&A on the film. He talks to Jan Gilbert about how it was made, Pencak Silat martial art, stunt accidents, the planned sequel and his future plans. Gareth Evans was inspired to make The Raid: Redemption after going to Indonesia to direct a documentary about Pencak Silat. During his time there, Gareth was fascinated by this martial art and was introduced to the lead actor Iko Uwais and a choreography team that he used on his first feature film Merantau. Pentak Silat is indigenous to Indonesia with over 200 different schools, and it borrows from animal styles such as Silat Harimau, a tiger style. Gareth Evans loves the juxtaposition of silat, how the lead up to an attack is very graceful and beautiful, while the attack is ugly and aggressive. Iko Uwais has a very rare skill as a screen fighter as he understands how to showcase the movement and how it appears on camera. The choreography team for The Raid: Redemption consisted of Iko Uwais, Gareth Evans and Yayan Ruhian who plays Mad Dog. Before pre-production the team spent three months in a room with crash mats and a Handycam, designing every fight scene in the movie as well as a video storyboard. Gareth Evans is a huge Jackie Chan fan and loves the way every action shot in his movies is like a jigsaw piece and fits together perfectly to maximise the experience for the audience. Gareth felt it was a challenge to achieve a similar effect in The Raid: Redemption and he wanted the film to be superfast and aggressive, similar to silat itself. Silat is forever adapting as a martial art and can be used both in a tight space and a wide open area. Gareth Evans, writer-director of The Raid: Redemption, explains how the production team aims to make the fight scenes as safe as possible, however there was one notable accident during shooting. In one scene a character is supposed to be flipped over a balcony and snap his back. The wire control went wrong on this occasion and the stunt man was injured although four days later he was back on set performing the same stunt. The Raid: Redemption has been very well received, so Gareth Evans explains how he will be shooting an even bigger and better sequel in January 2013. The sequel will continue the story although the action will move outside the building onto the street. Gareth is also an executive producer on the English-language version of the film which is currently in pre-production, and Iko Uwais and Yayan Ruhian will be involved in the choreography, which he is very excited about as silat will be part of a Hollywood movie. Gareth explains how eventually he would love to make a western such as The Wild Bunch, one of his favourite films.
