Today, as always, I venture out alone on a solo journey to find ruins of little-known Lausanne Ghost Town lost the woods at the mouth Nesquehoning Creek in Carbon County, Pennsylvania. Established in the late 1700s, the Lausanne (also known as Lausanne Landing) had the potential of becoming a booming coal and rail town. The cost set to sell the land was too high for the buyers, especially considering the town was already failing as the railroads started to boom elsewhere. As well, the area also was suffered from floods and so not the best place to continue to rebuild or expand the settlement. This was the ultimate devastation of Lausanne Town. Now nature is doing what it does best, reclaiming the abandoned lands where people have once made their homes. When I was searching for any details about Lausanne Town, I found a Karl Bodmer’s engraving depicting Mauk-Chunk landscape where I could see a wooded inclined plane to hoist coal cars. This circumstance makes me think that the powder storages, I filmed during the hike, can be dated nearly same age as Lausanne Ghost Town, i.e the end of 1700s – early 1800s. 00:00 Location description 01:08 Abandoned pump house foundation. This structure, I came across on my way to the town, doesn't belong to Lausanne Town. Built after 1860s by the Nesquehoning Valley Railroad. 02:47 A place where one of possible streets of the Lausanne Ghost Town used to be. 04:00 The rope bridge over Nesquehoning Creek. 05:18 Archaeological site 36CR142. The monument in memory of James (Crow) Hydro. 07:34 First building ruins. That's a dynamite storage or a toll house? 09:28 Allegedly this is ruins of the toll bridge over Jeans Run. 11:03 First powder house is in deplorable shape. 12:40 Second powder house is in better condition. 14:39 Traditional guardian to protect historic places.
