Professor John Devaney is Dean of the School of Social and Political Science at Edinburgh University, a qualified social worker, researcher, prolific author on the impact of childhood adversity, international speaker, and advisor to the Scottish Government on reviewing domestic homicides and suicides. ---------- Listen to the latest podcast here: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1dVFT... John’s insights into success will be of value, not just to those in the health, social care, and justice sectors, but to everyone who strives to be an effective leader in their profession and in their community. ------------- John’s insights included: Whatever your career, be open to opportunities, especially when they allow you to pursue your interests. All practices, regardless of profession or business, should be evidence-based. Domestic violence is widespread and we need to be aware, not just of the scale and scope of the problem, but how it impacts the lives of those involved, particularly children. Research is helping agencies to better understand how to effectively intervene with all involved, including perpetrators. Agencies must have processes and systems in place to ensure relevant support for involved professionals, including opportunities for debriefing, reflection, and processing of disturbing events as well as opportunities to consider the emotional impact. Professionals should prioritize self-care and have strategies and boundaries that enable them to stay resilient. Multi-agency working should involve real integrated practice, rather than just sharing information. Teamwork is essential and leaders should encourage feedback and suggestions as to how the business could be strengthened. Authentic leaders promote a culture of empowerment within their teams, encourage transparency, are quick to own up to their own mistakes, and trust others to share with them appropriately. Mistakes are inevitable and learning from them is what matters. That requires a willingness to consider and analyze what happened and look at how similar situations might be better handled in the future. Regardless of the level of seniority, everyone needs mentors, both formal and informal to assist with problem-solving, building confidence, and personal growth. John’s advice to his younger self is so relevant. “Worry less about what other people think about you. Do what you think is right!” Challenge: Who could benefit from your mentorship? --------------- ==================Timestamps --------------- 00:00 Intro to Leadership 00:28 Four Core Areas 01:10 Effective Communication 03:06 Academia Transition 05:02 Evidence-Based Practice 06:38 Addressing Abuse 09:15 Parental Homicide Impact 10:06 Emotional Resilience 12:00 Self-Care Strategies 13:07 Support Structures 14:33 Authentic Leadership 16:59 Mentoring Highlighted 19:07 Peer Support 21:18 Collaborative Training 25:22 Efficient Workload Management 28:15 Advice to Self 33:04 Conclusion & CTA ------------ ==============Key Points: -------------- 🌟 Core Leadership John Deveny highlights the essential pillars of leadership: communication, empathy, adaptability, and resilience. 📡 Communication Skills Effective communication is key for trust-building and collaboration, essential for both leadership and social work. 🔄 Academia Transition Deveny discusses his journey from practice to academia, enhancing leadership through research and teaching. 💪 Emotional Resilience Emotional strength is vital for leaders, especially in social work, to manage stress and maintain success. 🧠 Peer Mentoring Mentoring and peer support play crucial roles in leadership growth, offering guidance and fostering development. ---------------- ===============FAQs: ------------- Q.
