Toilets — and what we do in them — are one of our basic needs. Much like food. Yet, unlike food, people talk about it far less and often seem afraid to mention it. Just listen to how the process is named. “Attending to natural needs.” It sounds like reading out the minutes of an administrative offense. And yet there are endless jokes about waste, toilets, and relieving oneself. There’s an entire genre — toilet humor. That label is, in fact, perfectly official. But it still feels shameful to talk about toilets and what’s in them. Even more so, it feels shameful to talk about them seriously, as if your sophistication evaporates the moment you do. For the next twenty minutes or so, though, embarrassment and complexes stay outside. I promise you that. I tried to keep the number of strained jokes to a minimum — and you already know that straining is bad for your health. In this video we’ll run through the chronology three times to answer three simple questions. Why are we ashamed to use the toilet — and why, when we do it as guests, do we only do it with the tap running in the sink? (Not to pee in the sink — we mean turning the water on in the sink.) How did humanity invent sewers first, and then abandon them later? And finally, where did the separation into “M” and “F” come from, and how is this connected to Victorian England? History gives concrete answers to all of these questions. That’s what we’ll explore. #shame #sewer #toilet
