The inherent danger involved in this process necessitates a LOT of commentary on the subject of safety as well as sequence. This process produces hydrogen gas. Removing rust from inside an enclosed tank can be a recipe for disaster and is not to be embarked upon without taking the time to research the process from reliable resources, not just a YouTuber working in a home shop. There are at times redundancy in comments concerning safety...but it is THAT important. More than one guy has exploded gas tanks by inadvertently igniting the hydrogen build-up inside the tank and has been hurt performing this task as a result of improper technique. I do not do "How-To" videos. I merely record and share the things I do that may be considered interesting to some, tedious to others and downright silly by many. That being said, please do not do what I say or do, but please enjoy the efforts portrayed in the video and do additional research before attempting to do this for yourself. A rod or flat bar has to be immersed into the full tank of water through the neck of the tank opening. It must be fully insulated AT the opening and installed in such a fashion as to not block the opening off because that is the only way to vent the hydrogen gas that is released if the water level recedes. This rod or flat stock is referred to as the 'sacrificial anode' and attracts the byproduct of the process necessitating multiple cleaning periods...about twice a day. The anode loses material over the course of the project and I suspect that somehow this results in the transferrence of the material of the anode TO the internal portion of the tank. That's just a guess, I don't really know. Know though, that no matter how rusty internally, I have never had one begin to leak after this process was completed....which could be just dumb luck. Now also let me take the time to beg for the privilege of engaging in the activity of poetic license during the video commentary. Now I have to admit that I not only know nothing of chemical reactions, I don't actually KNOW what really happens underwater to cause this process to occur in the transference of rust. Is it electron flow...? Is it de-ionization...? Is it fermentation of the grapes in my wine barrel....No, that's a different video.... However I do know that water (H2O) contains 2 molecules of hydrogen and one molecule of oxygen and when exposed to this process one of the molecules of hydrogen is released. When released inside the confines of an enclosed tank a potential exists for rapid expansion of the hydrogen gas when exposed to a source of ignition. That's fancy talk meaning that it will EXPLODE !! I cannot make that more clear. In case you FF through all the safety parts of the video discussing this (1:16, 8:28, 9:13 and 10:56) I thought its pertinent to repeat the redundancy here. But if you FF'd, chances are you aren't reading this either, but just in case....you know. My videos are done more as a VLOG and are always done for entertainment and not intended to entice anyone to mimic my efforts.
