Who Are The Sidama Tribe?

Would you like to know about the Sidama Tribe? There are plenty of tribes in Ethiopia. One such tribe is the Sidama. Who are the Sidama Tribe? They are an ethno-linguistic group from the region called Sidama in the country, formerly part of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region of Ethiopia (SNNPR). After a zone-wide referendum on 23rd November 2019, Sidama Zone became the 10th regional state in Ethiopia. They speak the Sidama language, a language of the Cushitic branch of the Afro-Asiatic language family. Historical Background and Population The Sidama people's history was marked by migration and strife as they were chased away by the Oromo early in the 16th century from where they were initially residing in the historical province of Bali around the Dawa River. This caused them to migrate westward to their present homeland on the shores of Lake Hawassa. Oral traditions further trace that they encountered another tribe called Hofa, whom they later displaced. The Sidama traditionally were divided into two broad clan groups, the Yemericho and the Aletta, who competed for political power. The Sidama were forcibly incorporated into the Ethiopian Empire during the Agar Maqnat. Although some Sidama clans peacefully submitted to Menelik II, others unsuccessfully resisted the conquest. The Sidama people are approximately 3.81 million, making up 4.01 per cent of the total population of Ethiopia, with 149,480 living in urban areas. Their language, Sidaamu-Afoo, is spoken by 99.5 per cent according to the 1994 national census. Despite their large numbers, the Sidama didn’t have a separate ethnic regional state, which led to continuous protests. After a while, the protest was halted when a proposal was put to a vote in a referendum held in November 2019. That was a huge historical event for them, accompanied by more autonomy and recognition within Ethiopia. The Sidama attained regional state status on November 23, 2019, after a referendum and became the 10th regional state in Ethiopia. Prior to that, they used to be a part of the Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples' Region. With better and more enhanced services in education and health, the Sidama Region has many schools, colleges, and universities. This increase in autonomy has given the Sidama people the time and resources to take care of their regional needs and aspirations. Politics and Economy Almost 90 per cent of Sidama people depend on agriculture for their livelihood. They grow many crops, including wesse, a false banana, which is one of their staple crops. Coffee production is very important and forms a big part of Ethiopia's export economy, next to the Oromia region. Despite Sidama farmers being major contributors to the world coffee market, they have faced economic struggles due to falling world coffee prices. The Sidama also produces khat, a main cash crop. Their farming practices have deep cultural components associated with them, particularly cattle rearing. The religious practices are varied among the Sidama. Even though most of them have been converted to Protestantism, some still strongly adhere to their traditional beliefs. Indeed, spirit possession is a prominent feature of Sidama religious life, which anthropologists Irene and John Hamer have labelled as a kind of social compensation. In Sidama culture, this practice allows socially disadvantaged individuals, such as women and other marginalized groups, to gain influence as possessed healers. While traditional beliefs were predominant until the 1960s, European missionaries influenced many to turn to Protestantism. By the 1994 national census, the Sidama were 66.8 per cent Protestant, 7.7 per cent Muslim, 4.6 per cent Catholic, and 2.3 per cent Ethiopian Orthodox, with a mere 14.9 per cent retaining the traditional religion.
