Senna responded by slicing 0.009s from Alain's time, but Prost was already on his way to an even better effort. Senna was now relying on one last run on his qualifiers. 'I couldn't go any quicker on race tires,' said Ayrton. 'But when I put the qualifiers on, I had a slight problem with third gear jumping out a couple of times - I think one of the dog rings may have been damaged - and that meant things were a bit of a handful through the fast ess-bends.
