The Two Party System is Collapsing: Is a new 'Mass Party' the answer for anti-racists? The political landscape in Britain is fracturing. With the rise of smaller, more extreme contenders and key events such as the genocide in Gaza driving political homelessness, a new left-wing alternative is emerging. But what can the history of anti-colonial struggle teach us about the formation and dangers of a new political party? In this first episode of From the Belly of the Beast, we debate the prospects of a mass party for black and brown communities and the wider working class. We dive deep into the tensions between electoral politics and movement building, asking: What are the dangers of electoral politics for anti-racist struggle? How can we build political vehicles that challenge the 'smartness of cynicism' and avoid liberal identitarianism? How can a party become a true social and material infrastructure for liberation, not just an electoral vehicle? Host Mohammed Elnaiem (Director, Decolonial Centre) is joined by co-host Professor Gargi Bhattacharyya (Director, Sarah Parker Remond Centre) and Shanice Octavia McBean (co-author of Abolition Revolution and co-host of Life of the Party podcast) to discuss decolonial politics, the failure of social democracy and the necessity of building an internationalist movement against barbarism and the ruling class. This is a critical conversation for anyone seeking revolutionary change and a truly collective future in the face of rising authoritarianism.
