Kasper's Hot Dogs was founded in 1929 by Kasper Koojoolian at 4521 Telegraph Avenue in Oakland. Kasper opened several locations around Oakland and the East Bay. Members of the Koojoolian family wanted to further expand the family hot dog business and launched Casper's Hot Dogs. Named in honor of Kasper but spelled with a "C" to differentiate the spin-off hot dog chain from the original. When the Kasper's location on Telegraph Avenue closed in 2003 their store at 2551 MacArthur Blvd in Oakland's Dimond District became their flagship store, Kasper's #1. Many people wonder if there's any difference in the hot dog recipe between Kasper's and Casper's. The answer is yes. The original Kasper's is an all beef hot dog while Casper's dogs contain pork. Kasper's son Harold managed Kasper's Hot Dogs for more than 50 years. Harold announced his retirement in 2024. The flagship store on MacArthur Blvd in Oakland was closed forever on Thursday, October 16, 2025. - John Berg #hotdog #hotdogs #Kaspers #Caspers #Kasper's #Casper's #Oakland #original, #hot, #dog, #telegraph #MacArthur, #cheese, #chili, #tamales,
