Emma plays the justly ‘celebrated’ sarabande on an appropriately English instrument (A4=392, Marpourg temperament). Most modern performances eschew repeats. Here, the initial (Grave) section is repeated on the nasal stop (with the initial play without ornamentation) followed by the variations without repeats. After we listened to and experimented with numerous ornaments, Emma felt these were not to her taste and—perhaps not inappropriately for her age and experience—went with sparse, minimal ornamentation.
