The Election Commission of India is set to announce the first phase of its pan-India Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists on October 27, covering 10–15 states, including Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Kerala, Assam, and Puducherry. While EC officials have assessed readiness with chief electoral officers of poll-bound states, the move has sparked political controversy. Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin accused the BJP of using SIR as a “targeted political plot” to delete names of vulnerable voters. In Kerala, the assembly passed a unanimous resolution opposing SIR, while West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee warned that it could be a backdoor route to implement NRC.
