The Cascade is a giant stairway in Yerevan, Armenia. It links the downtown Kentron area of Yerevan with the Monument neighborhood. The construction of the cascade designed by architects Jim Torosyan, Aslan Mkhitaryan, Sargis Gurzadyan was launched in 1971 and completed in 1980. The exterior of Cascade, in addition to stairs has multiple levels with fountains and sculptures. The stairs afford walkers unobstructed views of central Yerevan and Mount Ararat. The Yerevan Cascade (1980), designed by Jim Torosyan, Aslan Mkhitaryan, and Sargis Gurzadyan, is a monumental terraced structure that integrates architecture, landscape, and urban design. Built into the hillside, the Cascade consists of grand staircases, fountains, and platforms offering panoramic views of Yerevan, with Mount Ararat in the distance. Originally conceived as a cultural and recreational space, it was left incomplete during the Soviet era. Today, it houses the Cafesjian Center for the Arts, blending Soviet monumentalism with contemporary art, making it a key landmark in Armenian modernism.
