As part of our series showcasing MPs’ efforts to promote and protect human rights, we highlight Hon. Abdoulaye Ben Méïté, President of the Commission on General and Institutional Affairs in Côte d’Ivoire’s Parliament. Through parliamentary oversight, collaboration with human rights institutions, and dynamic legislative action, Hon. Méïté works to ensure effective human rights protections across the country. The establishment of key institutional mechanisms has considerably improved the Parliament’s engagement with human rights: 🔹 The establishment of the National Council on Human Rights (CNDH) as a key oversight tool for parliaments has ensured greater alignment with the international standards, such as the Paris Principles. CNDH reports help the Côte d’Ivoire Parliament take parliamentary action, such as the drafting of a bill, putting a question to the the Head of State or inviting a member of the Executive to question a concrete government activity. 🔹 The creation of the Network of Parliamentarians for the Prevention, Protection and Defence of Human Rights has promoted a culture of human rights within the Parliament and sensitized parliamentarians about the issues and challenges in respect of human rights. Among other, the Network assesses government’s public policy on human rights and reflects on Cote d’Ivoire’s international commitments in the field. 📽️ Watch the full interview to learn how Côte d’Ivoire’s Parliament is ensuring human rights remain at the heart of governance! 💬 What role should parliaments play in advancing human rights?
