In the 19th century, a Zawiya (prayer corner) was built on this site. After decades of preparation, it was completed as a mosque in 2008. 🌐 Martyrs' Square (Arabic: ساحة الشهداء Sahat al Shouhada; historically known as "Al Burj" or "Place des Cannons", is the historical central public square of Beirut, Lebanon. It is named after the 6 May 1916 executions ordered by Djemal Pasha during World War I. 🌐 Saint George Maronite Cathedral (Arabic: كاتدرائية مار جرجس للموارنة) is the cathedral of the Maronite Catholic Archeparchy of Beirut, Archdiocese of the city of Beirut, Lebanon. Its construction, with a Neoclassical facade, interior and plan inspired by the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore, began in 1884 and ended in 1894. 🌐 Roman Cardo Maximus, the five Roman columns - remnants of a Roman market in Beirut - were discovered in 1963, next to the Maronite Cathedral of Saint George in downtown area. The columns are dated to the second century AD. 🌐 The Grand Théâtre, Lebanon also known as the Grand Théâtre des Mille et Une Nuits was a theatre located in downtown Beirut, Lebanon. It was opened in 1929 and was damaged by the civil war from 1975 to 1990. The structure is currently unused. 🌐 The Italian sculptor made the statue of the martyr Riad Solh in his atelier in Rome and shipped it to Lebanon in December 1956. 🌐 The façade of a Roman public building was revealed in 1994, during the construction of the parliamentary offices, which indicated the presence of a Roman forum. 🌐 The garden near El Bourj building offers room for meditation. A bronze statue of Samir Kassir by Louis Debré (France) is a commemoration of the late journalist and political activist 🌐 Under the ruins of a landmark cinema ravaged by the civil war, archaeologists have unearthed remnants of a castle built in Beirut by 12th century Crusaders. The Crusades were a series of wars undertaken by European Christians between the 11th and 14th centuries to reconquer the Holy Land from its Muslim rulers. They took Beirut in 1110 and built castles on Lebanon’s mountains and the coastline to defend against attacks. 🌐 The Emir Assaf Mosque (Arabic: جامع الأمير منصور عساف) is a mosque located in downtown Beirut, Lebanon.
