Officials in Veria, a quaint city that lies some 72 kilometres (45 miles) west of Thessaloniki, the country's second largest city, say the region's spring celebration gets bigger "with each passing year." The majority of farmers in the area cultivate peaches. “We celebrate spring in the best possible way, with the flowering of 170,000 hectares of peach trees in our region's plains,” said Gianna Pilitsidou, Veria Tourism Club president. "I think we have succeeded in making flowers part of Greece's tourism product. We were the first to do that and it gets bigger with each passing year,” she adds. The beauty of the area at this time of year has long prompted local authorities to use the peach blossom season to attract tourists from Greece and neighbouring countries.
