The blind flange is basically a flange that does not have a hub or a bored center. Blind flanges have the face thickness of a flange, a matching face type, and similar bolting pattern. Blind flanges can also be used to seal a nozzle opening on a pressure vessel. A blind flange is a solid flange as shown below. The purpose of these is to block off a section of pipe or a nozzle on a vessel that is not used. (A nozzle is typically a pipe coming out of a vessel and is usually flanged so it can be connected to valves or piping). The key types of flanges are the welding neck, long welding neck, slip-on, socket weld, lap joint, threaded and blind flanges. In addition to these standard flanges, some special ones exist, called Weldoflange/Nipoflange and Elboflange, swivel flange, expander/reducer flange, and orifice flanges. The raised face (RF) is the most common type of flange facing used. It is called a raised face flange because it has a raised surface above the bolting circle where the gasket is placed. These flanges are widely used in oil and gas pipelines. They are appropriate for both high and low temperatures and pressures. Spectacle Blinds are simple safety devices that are installed between two pipe flanges. ... To stop the flow in the pipeline, the blind end is rotated into place between the flanges. This positively isolates the downstream piping and equipment. A Spectacle Blind is generally installed as a permanent fixture. Spectacle Blinds are generally applied to permanently separating pipesystems, or just to connect with each other. A Spectacle Blind is a steel plate cut into two discs of a certain thickness. The two discs are attached to each other by section of steel similar to the nose piece of a pair of glasses. Spectacle blind, flange spade, and ring spacer are forged products used to blind pipelines (temporarily or permanently). These devices are cost-effective alternatives to isolation valves. A spectacle blind combines, in one single product, a flange spade and a ring spacer. Spade and ring spacer flanges are basically the same as spectacle blind flange,except that they are not attached to each other. ... The spade or spacer is fitted in the line between two flanges and is bolted in place. The spade flange is used to completely shut off the pipeline so that maintenance can take place safely and they are regarded as being significantly more reliable than an isolation valve.
