How Communications and Journalism are Critical to Public Health | CDC Foundation, GMMB (Wednesday, September 23) DESCRIPTION: As the Covid-19 pandemic rages on across the United States, uneven national and local responses are hindering efforts to coordinate a unified strategy to check the spread of the coronavirus. Part of the problem: Unclear, sometimes contradictory communications and the inability of public health authorities to cut through misinformation. In this session, Dr. Judith Monroe, head of the CDC Foundation, and Matt James of GMMB (and formerly of the Kaiser Family Foundation) will explore how the social sector can help make a difference in public health, the role of journalism in health, and more. IDEAS WE’LL EXPLORE WITH DR. MONROE AND MATT: How communications is tied into public health policy, personal decisions, and political leadership. What narratives surrounding public health may shift during and after the current pandemic. The role of the private and social sectors in public health. Why deeper investments in journalism are necessary for a healthier society. How foundations and nonprofits can use their “influence endowments” to make a difference. Dr. Judith Monroe, president and CEO of the CDC Foundation, has dedicated her career to protecting people and saving lives. She joined the CDC Foundation in February 2016 as president and CEO, following her role as a deputy director of CDC and director of CDC’s Office of State, Tribal, Local and Territorial Support. In her work at the CDC Foundation, Dr. Monroe advances priority programs that improve the health of people around the world and prepare other nations to better prevent, detect and respond to dangerous health threats, including the current COVID-19 pandemic. During her tenure as the state health commissioner for Indiana she served as president of the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials through the H1N1 pandemic. Matt James is a Senior Counselor with GMMB, a strategic communications firm he joined in 2018 after a career in philanthropy, nonprofits and politics. James was Executive Vice President of the Kaiser Family Foundation where he headed media and public education and helped design and launch Kaiser Health News. In 2011 James co-founded Next Generation and in 2016 he was selected as a Visiting Scholar by the David and Lucile Packard Foundation, where he focused on health and climate change. James is currently a CDC Foundation board member and has served on the boards of Grantmakers in Health, the Lucile Packard Foundation for Children’s Health and the Communications Network.
