Perish Song is a move that makes all Pokemon faint in 3 turns. So using this with a Pokemon like Gothitelle that has the ability Shadow Tag is a no brainer. Shadow Tag prevents your opponent from switching out their Pokemon while Gothitelle is in the battle. Perish Song users include Lapras, Gengar, Cursola and Primarina. And Shadow Tag users in VGC 2020 is really only Gothitelle... but we can also use G-Max Sandaconda which traps all both opposing Pokemon into a Sandstorm (which prevents them from switching) and does continual damage. So as you can see Perish Trap is still a viable strategy even without Mega Gengar. The reason Mega Gengar is the face of Perish Trap is because it has Shadow Tag as well as Perish Song which makes it the whole package!
